The earthy open-air markets in Chinese Turkestan are probably my favorite travel destination. Wandering through one section of the animal market in Kashgar, this young girl had wrapped herself over the back of a donkey, clutching the lead rope, clearly with the responsibility of keeping the animal from wandering. When I snapped this photo, she reacted only with her cautious stare, thus the name of the painting.
